If you are watching or listening to this – you are privileged. We are all privileged. If the events of 2020 and especially the last few weeks have taught us anything, it is that. The problem is that most of us don’t know how privileged we truly are and are so caught up in the idea that in order for us to ‘win’ at life that others have to lose, that we refuse to see it.
Instead of using the tools of our privilege to help others navigate the waters we have already crossed, we use it as a weapon to keep them from catching up. Why?
How do I know this? How do I know what it is like to be so caught up in your own experiences that you are no longer able to respect those of others? I have lived it. I have believed that ‘If I can do it – anyone can!”
And I was wrong.
It wasn’t until I truly saw myself through the eyes of others and opened myself up to their lived experiences, perspectives and opinions that I began to understand and appreciate that. Acknowledging another’s pain does not mean you cannot feel your own, it’s not a competition.
We cannot truly win unless everyone wins.
How will you use your privilege today to make the life of someone else brighter?
